Tote Bag Embroidery Ideas: 16 Machine Embroidery Designs for a Canvas Bag

A canvas tote is the most forgiving thing you can put in an embroidery hoop. It is woven, it does not stretch, and it can carry a dense design that would pucker a sweatshirt. That is why tote bags are where machine embroidery ideas get bold. These 16 designs are sorted from light line art that stitches in minutes to showpieces over an hour long, and every one lists its hoop sizes and stitch counts. All are hand-digitized and come in the usual formats (PES, DST, JEF, EXP, HUS, VP3, XXX and more).

How to get all of them

All sixteen are part of Creative Fabrica's All Access subscription: $47 for the year, 145,000+ embroidery designs, commercial license included — which matters if you plan to sell embroidered totes. The trial gives you 10 downloads, enough to stitch a test bag before you pay anything.

How to embroider a tote bag

ToteDesign sizePlace it
Standard 15x16 inup to 8x83–4 in below the handle seam, centred
Small book bag5x7centred on the front panel
Boat-and-tote stylemonogram 3–4 in tallcentred, a third of the way down
Pencil case, pouch3x4 to 4x4before the pouch is assembled

Hoop the bag itself. Turn the tote inside out, slide the front panel into the hoop and pull the rest of the bag out of the way. Canvas is stable enough to hoop directly — floating a tote on stabilizer is how designs end up crooked.

Stabilizer: a medium tear-away is enough under light line art on heavy canvas. Anything over about 25,000 stitches wants a cut-away, so the back stays flat once the bag is loaded with books.

Black totes: pick designs with light outlines, and trim the stabilizer close so white edges do not show inside the bag.

Questions people ask

What size embroidery design fits a tote bag?

A standard 15 by 16 inch tote takes a design up to about 8x8 inches, placed 3 to 4 inches below the handle seam. A small book bag suits 5x7, and a pencil case or pouch 3x4 to 4x4.

Do I hoop the tote bag or float it?

Hoop it. Turn the bag inside out, put the front panel in the hoop and keep the rest of the bag clear of the needle. Canvas is stable enough to hoop directly, and hooped totes stitch straighter than floated ones.

What stabilizer should I use on a canvas tote?

A medium tear-away under light designs on heavy canvas. For anything over roughly 25,000 stitches, use a cut-away so the design stays flat when the bag is carrying weight.

How many stitches can a tote bag take?

Far more than clothing. Canvas does not stretch, so a 40,000 to 50,000 stitch showpiece is fine on a heavy tote — the same design would make a sweatshirt stiff.

Can I sell tote bags I embroider with these designs?

Yes. The All Access subscription includes a commercial license on everything you download, which makes embroidered totes one of the standard craft-fair sellers.
